My Monologues

My final video

Not my final video.

Story Line Revision

Once upon a time,
 there was a little girl named Jackie.  She played the violin, and didn’t like it.  Jackie’s Mom made her play the violin because she knew what was best for her.  She was in an orchestra, and every so often they would have a concert.  Against Jackie’s will, she would have to attend these concerts and perform.   One day Alexa, her best friend, invited her to come over and spy on the cute neighbor boy.  Jackie ran to ask her Mom for permission, but there was a concert that day and her mom said she must go.  Sulking, Jackie went and got ready.  When she arrived, another orchestra was playing so she had to wait an hour before going on stage.  Jackie and all the people in her orchestra went into the gym to pass the time.   They were all told by their super nice instructor Mrs. Macky, who was also Jackie’s private violin teacher, to practice their pieces.  Jackie and her friend Betsy didn’t want to practice.  As soon as the Mrs. Macky left the room, Jackie and Betsy started running around sword fighting with their violin bows.  Mrs. Macky entered the room yelling at the two girls to stop.  This startled Jackie.  She tripped over a music stand and flew towards Mrs. Macky with her violin bow in hand.  The bow stabbed Mrs. Macky straight in the eye, and Jackie fell to the floor.  Everyone was silent, except Mrs. Macky who started screaming while blood streamed down her face.  Jackie was very very shaken and sorry; she didn’t know what to do, so she kept apologizing.  Mrs. Macky just kept screaming.   Another instructor heard the commotion and ran into the room.  Realizing what had happened she took Mrs. Macky to the hospital.  Jackie and her orchestra still had to play in the concert.  Jackie felt terrible, and was very embarrassed for not listening.  From that day on she never saw Mrs. Macky again and never told a soul what happened, but she did from then on do what she was told.
The End.

Mapping Life Theme Idea

I have an idea for the Map I have to create about my life.  I have lived in a couple different states throughout my life, and I have many different memories in each state.  So I will get a large canvas and paint an outline of each state.  Inside each state I will write one word memories Ive had in each state.   Then i will connect these states somehow, maybe how I moved to each, not exactly sure.  But eaach state is going to look something like this:
I found this on google. http://mappery.com/Brooklyn-Neighborhood-Art-Map
Hope it works out like I'm imaging it to

Modular Madness Critique

During my critique everyone said they liked my peice.  The color I chose really helped it and the shape was interesting.  Someone said it made them happy to look at.
The one thing that they would have liked to see was it going down the stairs more.
Overall it was a very comforting critique!

....Then I had to rip it apart  :( very frustrating.

Modular Maddness...photos coming soon.

MATERIALS
1. Sensitive use of materials: does the form of the overall piece respond to or resonate with
the objects chosen as modules?
- The form definitely responds to the plastic cups I chose, the objects obviously did what they wanted to, there was no force applied when building this form.
2. Could the piece be made from another object just as well, or is there precise/necessary
correspondence between the objects and the structure?
-  This piece couldn’t be replicated with any other object.  The type of cup is helpful because plastic is very sturdy, if you used something such as Styrofoam it wouldn’t have held up.   Also the color of the cups add greatly to the piece, if they were just one color it would affect the viewer in a different way.
3. Explain any material difficulties in usage?
- The only material difficulties I had dealt with my glue gun.  It only had one heat setting…high…and it would melt the plastic.
4. Meaningful discoveries?
- I discovered that you can really listen to your object, and when you do it works wonders.  At first I didn’t understand how that was possible, but then when I realized what my cups wanted to do without me forcing them, it helped my overall piece.
PROCESS/AMBITIOUSNESS
1. Does the piece rise above the ordinary in terms of scale, materials or effort?
- This piece rises above the ordinary because of its scale and effort.  It is quite large, much larger than myself, and it looks as though its engulfing the WASH building.   Also I put a lot of effort into it, coming in after hours tediously gluing.
2. How did the piece change from initial mental imaginings to final piece?
-  At first I pictured this piece to be much smaller.  Basically the base of my piece was going to be my original final project.  I was told by a fellow classmate that I should use the stair case and wrap my object around it.  This was a wonderful idea and I went along with it.
3. Was the initial idea or final piece more ambitious? How so?
- The final piece was definitely more ambitious because of the size and shape it became.

CRAFTSMANSHIP
Is the way the piece put together helping the overall effect or distracting from it (How so?)
-          The way this piece was put together helps the overall effect because each cup strand flows to accentuate, not to distract.

FORM

1. What are the dominant formal elements (point, line, shape, color, texture, value, space)
visible in the work? Are these elements important to the piece? In what ways?
-   The dominant formal elements are line, shape, color, texture, space.  These elements are the backbone of my piece, without them it wouldn’t be much at all.

2. What are the dominating principles (scale, hierarchy, repetition, rhythm, unity, contrast,
balance, space, gravity, continuance, similarity/difference) visible or implied in the work?
Explain how each dominating principle helps strengthen the impression of the work or
detracts.
-The dominating principles in my piece are scale, repetition, rhythm, unity, contrast, balance, space, gravity, continuance, and similarity/ difference; all visible.  The scale, space, continuance, and gravity of the piece helps it look as if its taking over, which goes along with its plant like theme.  The repetition helps it because it looks as if its flowing.  The rhythm helps because it creates movement for your eye to follow.  And finally the balance of the piece gives it the stability to not fall over.
CONCEPT
1. Does piece relate to the source objects history, function or purpose?
If so, how?
-          Yes, the first synthetic plastic was made from the plant material cellulose.  The material they used to make plastic is called Celluloid.  They now use a different material to mass produce, but for 30 years they used Celluloid. The history of plastic relates to the structure my objects took, the plastic cups were forming into the object they came from.

2. How does the presentation of the piece alter the viewers understanding of the source
object?
-          The presentation of the piece alters the viewers understanding of plastic cups because not many people know that plastic was made from pant cellulose.  It also gives the viewers a better understanding of why I formed the objects that specific way.

PRESENTATION
1. Why here?
-  It gives the impression that it is growing out of control, the stairs were the best way to show this.
2. What is the relationship of the work to the space?
- The relationship of the work to the space is very intimate.
3. How do the surrounding elements impact the viewing and impression of the piece?
-The surrounding elements impact the viewing in a positive way, it gives the impression that the piece is just growing like a plant, not giving a care to what is around it.
4. Does the piece respond or ignore what is around it? How so?
- The piece responds to its surroundings because it’s working itself around all the obstacles, the surroundings somewhat create this piece.

Menil Visit.

This was the first time I have ever been to an art museum, very interesting.  I liked it alot, but some of the art work made me realize you can just paint a large canvas one solid color and have one black strip going down the middle, and an art museum will pay you a large sum of money.  Awesome!

Writing Assignment:

A. Which was your favorite of the things you saw? Why? Does it use repetition/rhythm? If so what formal elemnts are being repeated?
One of my favorite things I saw during my walk through of the Menil was a surrealism painting done by Yves Tanguy, called Le Ciel Traque (The Hunted Sky).  The color choice and the metallic 3D look grabbed my attention.  Even though the colors were gloomy, it seemed to glow.  It was a very modern painting.  Tanguy used repetition/rhythm throughout this painting by repeating the color, shapes, and textures.

B. What peice in the museum is the most like something you might make yourself, or would like to make?
If I wasn’t going to become a photographer, then I would like to create art like Rene Margritte.  The surrealism paintings drew my attention, and her art looked like something I would create if I could paint.
C. Get a copy of the handout that goes with the temporary exhibition "Kissed by Angels: A Selection of work from Southern California."  Read the essay about LA's "Cool School."  Choose a work in the show that is not described in the essay, and tell how you think it fits or doesn't fit into the show's theme.  Be sure to include the piece's title, artist and date, and to support your ideas with specific descriptions of works in the show.
The essay about LA’s “Cool School” says that the artists in California are trying to create a different look than what California is perceived to be.  When people think of California they think of Disney Land or Hollywood, and the artists are trying to get away from this.  With their art they are creating a cooler look, less analytical, more subtle, and economical.  In the exhibition “Kissed by Angels,” there was a painting called Aloha Draculas, by Billy Al Bengston 1980.  This painting I think doesn’t fit in with the rest of the art work in the exhibition.  He uses bright reds, yellows, and oranges to paint a sunset.  The rest of the art in there dealt with cool colors and revealed a sense of calm.
D. Vija Celmins was also working in Los Angeles in the 60's.  Her show is titled "Television and Disaster," and has a markedly different feel from the work in "Kissed By Angels." Get the handout and read the essay that goes with her show.  Compare the two shows: what concerns do these LA artists have in common? Where do they difffer?
  Vija Celmins and the artists in “Kissed By Angles” are similar because they both are trying to use their art to move away from something.  In “Kissed By Angles” the artists are trying to move away from the typical California persona. While Vija Celmins is trying to move away from the diaristic subjectivity and juicy emotive content that had defined the action painting of the New York School.   They are very different also, Vija Celmins depicts real objects, where as the artists in “Kissed By Angles” create more abstract art.

Human Dot Composition.

My two human dot compositions:

The Dot Compositions (not human) that I followed for the human comp.:

How our group rated ourselves:

5 = Craft of Documentation
  • Our size and printing of our photographs were consistant.
4 = Use of White or Negative Space. Why?
  • We put creativity into the white space.  The paint and wrinkles of the white space go along with our theme.  We could have used something different for a white background, but it worked.
5 = Dots. Why?
  • Appearance of dots are very prominant.  Creative use of body parts
5 = Human Element. Why?
  • Obvious....
5 = Theme and/or Meaning. Why?
  • Ruff, edgy, raw, nude.  To show that we were tired of the precise and prestine dot compositions before.
4 = Group Process. Why?
  • We worked together well, and all became a little more comfortable with eachother! Everyone was prepared and brought the materials they needed.  The only problem was it was crowded behind the white sheet of paper.  Other than that we worked together just fine.
Fun project!
